Electromagnetic Waves and Us
Overview
This lesson's focus is applications of electromagnetic waves and how they can be useful and harmful for the environment and human. Since the two lessons before this one already touched upon practical application of electromagnetic waves, this lesson is focused greatly on their influence on human health and life. Different electromagnetic waves have different characteristics, and because of their different behaviors, they have different effects on the environment and human life. Most of the applications covered in the previous lessons will be the positive effects on human beings, so the influence covered in this lesson will be more about the harmful effects on human beings.
This lesson could be designed to be a great research project. Since the next lesson is focused mainly on research, this lesson could be a bridge to the "big" research project. It would be nice to introduce different websites they could be using or different techniques they could use to make their research informative and useful.

Standards
AAACWave behavior can be described in terms of how fast the disturbance spreads, and in terms of the distance between successive peaks of the disturbance (the wavelength). 4F/M7
ISBE
13.A.3a Identify and reduce potential hazards in science activities (e.g., ventilation, handling chemicals).13.A.3b Analyze historical and contemporary cases in which the work of science has been affected by both valid and biased scientific practices.13.B.3e Identify advantages and disadvantages of natural resource conservation and management programs.
Learning Objectives
- Students will be able to analyze different effects that electromagnetic waves have on humans.
- Students will be able to identify the waves that are harmful or useful for us.
- Students will be able to describe the reason why certain waves might be harmful for us.
- Students will be able to organize the information given.
