Differentiated Instruction for ELL Students
In the modern society, there is a sharp increase in immigrant population, and the demographics are rapidly changing. This change has a huge impact on classrooms, and special differentiated instruction is needed to even out this change. As more students from foreign countries make up the class, educators need to be aware of language and cultural barrier they might face in their classrooms.
This unit plan is differentiated in many ways to support the ELL students, such as making the teaching styles. A great variety of teaching styles will be achieved by adding visuals, audio sources, hand-on activities, worksheet, and reading materials. One great example of supporting ELL students with a variety of methods of teaching styles is Lesson 5 - Applications of Waves. In this lesson, students use computer simulation to analyze and support their understanding of the content. This will be a great way for ELL students to show their understanding of the material through their own way because this lesson will enable them to support their ideas in different means such as graphs, drawing, or explaining the content in their own words.
Additionally, Lesson 5 provides visuals and audio sources in order for students to understand. The simulation will show the results of their manipulation of variables on the screen, and this will help ELL students to understand the material in a way that they can perceive. The audio will help them in a similar way.
Lesson 5 also involves the use of technology, and since most students will be not too familiar with it, the ELL students and other students will start from the same page which will help both students to learn more effectively since the instructor can teach all the students in the same way.
