Differentiated Instruction
Differentiated instruction is needed with any lesson in order to support all ranges of students in class. This unit is itself is differentiated in many different areas for there is a variety of teaching styles included such as demonstration, flipped classroom, inquiry lesson, using technology, research project, and scientific experiment. Using different teaching styles will help students to learn in different ways, and this will not only provide them to learn in their own learning styles but also to stretch them to learn in different learning styles that they are not quite familiar with. In the future, they will experience many different teaching styles, and being aware of different styles and getting used to them will ultimately help students to learn more effectively in a long term.
The different learning styles that this unit will support are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. The specific example in this unit that supports visual learners is the third lesson - Sound Waves. This lesson consist mainly of demonstrations, and visual learners will effectively learn the concepts through seeing the different experiments and their results. Lesson 5 - Application of Waves will also greatly support the visual learners for the students will mainly use the computer simulation to manipulate the different variables, and they will see the results on the screen as they use the computer simulation.
Auditory learners will learn from most of the lessons because all the lessons' instructions and important concepts will be delivered by the instructor orally. In addition to that, lesson 3 - Sound Waves will be very helpful for the auditory learners to understand the concept because most of the experiments and activities they will be performing are designed for them to learn the concept through analyzing the sound waves by listening to different types of sound.
Kinesthetic learners will also learn through most of the lessons because majority of the lessons include hand-on activities. Additionally, they will learn most effectively through Lesson 2 - Light and Colors because they will learn the concepts through manually manipulating different variables using a black box, cellophane sheets and a light source.
As listed above, this lesson is differentiated in many ways for all the students to effectively learn the concepts. All students have different ways of learning, and having different teaching styles for learning the same concept is very important for students' effective learning.
