Assessment
Throughout the lessons, instructors need to properly and strategically assess students' understanding of the material in order to maximize the effectiveness of teaching. Assessment is a very important component of teaching because knowing what students understood, and utilizing their prior knowledge and building onto their knowledge will help students to learn more effectively. There are different types of assessment - formative and summative, and both assessment types need to be used to maximize instructors' understanding of students' knowledge.
In this unit, formative assessment is used in every single lesson. For the introduction of each lesson, students will be asked to answer few questions that are related to the material that will be taught on that day. For example, in Lesson 5 - Application of Waves, the questions "what are the properties of waves?" and "What is the relationship between them? - what happens to frequency when wavelength increases? What happens to energy when frequency increases?" were used. Theses questions are placed in the introduction of the lesson so that instructor can have an understanding of how much students know about the material before the lesson. The summative assessments are placed throughout the unit as well, but they will be in many different forms such as multiple choice questions, short answers, short and long writing assignments, and research projects. The good example of summative assessment in this unit is the lesson (lesson 9) which is a research project. This is strategically placed as a last lesson of the unit, so students can apply their content knowledge to the research project. Although they will be using a lot of outside information, to meet the project's objectives, students will have to use the material they have been learning throughout the unit. ?
